While it will probably be a very long time before anyone can break the six world records that GTA V holds, some games do come close to the success of the series. It is by far the benchmark when it comes to sales and success. The series sold a staggering 150 million copies worldwide. Since that time, GTA has been the dominant force when it comes to open-world gaming. It wasn’t until GTA III came along that the game changed.
Originally, GTA wasn’t even done in the format we know today. Is that because it’s been around the longest? It resonates with audiences? Has the most elaborate story? Or perhaps because it broke six world records.
When it comes to open world, one name sticks out above all the rest.
